Omaha Technical High School
1923 - 1984

Auditorium Restoration Programs
When Technical High School opened in 1923, it was the largest school west of Chicago and was thought to be the
best equipped high school in the country. Located at 3215 Cuming Street, the school served the community for six
decades before closing in 1984.
Upon the closing of Tech High, a complete building renovation took place, with the exception of the auditorium and the
original lobby. The renovated building still houses many resources for the community, including the Career Center, which
serves over 700 Omaha Public School students daily and the Teacher Administrative Center (TAC), with offices for the
Omaha Public School system teachers and student support services. The building also houses the original Technical High
School auditorium.
During the days of Tech High School, the auditorium was used for dramatic arts, meetings, rehearsals, graduations,
assemblies and more. Highlights of the performances included nationally and internally known performers:
The Metropolitan Opera Company of New York
Pavley-Oukrainsky Ballet
Songwriter George Gershwin
First Lady of American Theatre and Tony Award Winner, Helen Hayes
Actor, Producer and Screenwriter, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.
The auditorium was also used by many local companies and organizations, including the Children's Symphony, College
of Saint Mary, Omaha World Herald, Omaha Symphony, Jewish Youth Council, U.S. Air Force Band and many more.
Since the last Tech High class graduated and the school closed, the auditorium has still been used by the community, but
the facility is in great need of restoration and repairs. The auditorium has not been renovated since the day it was built,
in 1923. With a complete restoration, including changes to meet fire codes, handicap accessibility and aesthetics, the
auditorium will once again be able to function as an important performance and educational hall for the Omaha community.
